To mark National Apprenticeship Week, we sat down with two of Pexhurst’s Rising Stars – Site Managers Aaron McElligott and Matt Springett, to speak about their journey on our bespoke Apprenticeship Scheme.
Aaron and Matt joined Pexhurst in 2023 and completed the Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor Apprenticeship last May. Since then, both have continued their professional development through further study:
- Aaron is working towards his Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management (Building and Civil Engineering).
- Matt has started a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship, studying towards a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management.
This month marks a major milestone for both, as they were promoted from Assistant Site Managers to Site Managers, now leading and running their own sites.
We caught up with Aaron and Matt for a quick-fire Q&A to hear more about their journey so far.
1. Can you tell us about your journey into the construction industry and what first attracted you to this career path?
Aaron:
I grew up around the construction industry with my Dad, and I took every chance I got to go to work with him. I also loved machinery – I actually operated an excavator for the first time at the age of 3 (alongside my Dad!). I started in the construction industry working on RC Frames and groundworks in London on some interesting projects, but I always knew I wanted to move into the management side.
Matt:
My journey in construction started with working and learning HVAC and ventilation. This was a great foundation for me to gain an understanding of mechanical work on-site and the day-to-day life on-site. I then had an opportunity with Pexhurst to progress my career with a site management apprenticeship. Construction piqued my interest due to the fast-paced industry and the constant sense of progression.
2. What has your apprenticeship and early career experience been like so far?
Aaron:
My apprenticeship has been great – I’ve worked alongside some very experienced and knowledgeable people, which has been invaluable. One of the most important skills I’ve developed is problem-solving — every project comes with challenges, and being proactive and working collaboratively to resolve issues is key. I take that mindset into every project I work on.
Matt:
I study on a day-release basis as part of my apprenticeship, which allows me to learn the theory behind the industry and apply it practically on site. Modules such as Structural Principles have helped me understand complex subjects and support me when day-to-day challenges arise.
3. How has Pexhurst supported your learning and progression?
Aaron:
I’m surrounded by great people, and whenever I need help or have a question, there’s always support. Now that I’m running my first project, I’m constantly reminded that no question is a silly one. Pexhurst has invested heavily in my development through training courses, which has significantly expanded my construction knowledge.
Matt:
Pexhurst have been instrumental in my learning and professional development. They have provided me with an abundance of training and CPDs, paired me with some of the best industry professionals to learn from onsite, and Pexhurst have entrusted me to gain valuable on-the-job experience by running my own project.
4. Do you have any standout moments or achievements since joining Pexhurst?
Aaron:
Completing one of Pexhurst’s most logistically challenging and technically complex projects stands out for me. Being part of such a transformation — and seeing the final result after all the effort — was incredibly rewarding.
Matt:
My standout achievement to date has to be winning the Rising Star Award 2025. Being voted by my colleagues helps me feel that all the hard work I have put in over the year has been recognised, and it keeps me motivated to continue working hard with a smile on my face!
5. What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship or a career in construction?
Aaron:
Time management is crucial. Balancing site work with coursework can be challenging, so starting coursework early really helps reduce stress. It’s also important to switch off after work and make time for things you enjoy.
Matt:
Be a sponge. The people you work with have a huge depth of knowledge and experience, and you can learn so much from them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and it always helps me to write down any information that is new.
Aaron and Matt’s journey highlights the opportunities available through Pexhurst’s apprenticeship scheme – combining hands-on experience, structured learning, and clear progression routes. As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud to support and develop the next generation of construction professionals.
